What's Happening?
The San Jose Sharks recently hosted their fourth annual Pride Scrimmage at the SAP Center, an event designed to celebrate inclusion and community within the hockey world. This year, the scrimmage featured Team Teal staff competing against the San Francisco
Earthquakes LGBTQ+ adult ice hockey team and Team Trans. The event has grown in significance, marking its second year of including Team Trans, and continues to foster representation and belonging in the sport. Kevin Brown, Executive Director of the Sharks Foundation, emphasized the importance of creating spaces where LGBTQ+ athletes feel welcomed and valued. The scrimmage serves as a reminder of hockey's potential to unite people and create a sense of belonging.
Why It's Important?
The Pride Scrimmage is significant as it highlights the ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity in sports, particularly in hockey, which has historically been less diverse. By hosting such events, the San Jose Sharks are taking active steps to ensure that LGBTQ+ athletes have a platform where they can express themselves freely and feel part of the community. This initiative not only supports the athletes but also sets a precedent for other sports organizations to follow, potentially leading to broader acceptance and representation of diverse groups in sports. The event underscores the importance of inclusivity in fostering a supportive environment for all athletes.
