What's Happening?
WeWereMonkeys, a Vernon-based video game studio, has received a $50,000 grant from Creative BC's Video Games Early Stage Growth program. The funding is part of a $300,000 initiative to support six emerging video game companies in British Columbia. WeWereMonkeys is developing
'The Death of Akina,' a dark action-adventure game set on a planet devastated by a technological god. The studio, founded in 2008, specializes in narrative-driven digital media and has previously worked on projects for Taylor Swift and Of Monsters and Men. The funding will aid in prototyping, design, and production, as well as hiring local talent.
Why It's Important?
This funding represents a significant boost for WeWereMonkeys and other emerging studios, enabling them to develop creative intellectual property and compete in the global gaming market. By supporting early-stage companies, Creative BC aims to foster innovation and sustainability within the local video game industry. This initiative not only helps studios like WeWereMonkeys bring new games to market but also contributes to the growth of the creative economy in British Columbia. The success of these projects could lead to increased investment and job creation in the region.
