What's Happening?
Walmart has introduced a new marketplace called Connect Select, designed to make streaming TV ads more accessible for small and medium-sized businesses. This initiative is part of Walmart's demand-side platform (DSP), which already includes search and display
ads. Through Connect Select, advertisers can purchase ads on platforms like Vizio and premium publishers such as Warner Bros. Discovery. The platform is integrated with supply-side platforms like FreeWheel, Index Exchange, Magnite, and PubMatic. Ryan Mayward, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Walmart's retail media business, Walmart Connect, stated that this move aims to simplify the process for businesses on Walmart's third-party marketplace to advertise on TV.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it opens up new advertising avenues for small and medium-sized businesses, which traditionally may not have had the resources to engage in TV advertising. By leveraging Walmart's extensive retail media network, these businesses can now reach a broader audience through streaming TV ads. This could potentially level the playing field, allowing smaller businesses to compete with larger corporations in terms of advertising reach and effectiveness. Additionally, it reflects a growing trend where retail giants are expanding their media capabilities to capture more advertising dollars, particularly in the streaming space, which is becoming increasingly popular among consumers.
What's Next?
As Walmart continues to expand its media offerings, it is likely that more businesses will take advantage of these new advertising opportunities. This could lead to increased competition in the streaming ad space, prompting other retailers to enhance their media platforms. Furthermore, as more small businesses begin to advertise on streaming platforms, there may be a shift in how advertising budgets are allocated, with a greater focus on digital and streaming media. Stakeholders in the advertising industry will be closely monitoring the impact of Walmart's Connect Select on the market dynamics.
