The California Attorney General's office has announced a $2.75 million settlement with the Walt Disney Company, marking the largest settlement under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to date. This settlement follows an investigation initiated
in 2024 into the compliance of various streaming services with the CCPA. The investigation revealed that Disney allegedly failed to honor consumer requests to opt-out of the sale or sharing of their personal data, a violation of the CCPA. Specifically, it was found that even when consumers opted out on one device, their data continued to be shared or sold through other devices. As part of the settlement, Disney is required to implement a more user-friendly opt-out process and ensure that opt-out requests are honored across all platforms associated with a consumer's account. Disney must also report its compliance efforts to the Attorney General for the next three years.
