What's Happening?
The Denver Summit, a new expansion team in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), set a new league attendance record during their match against the Washington Spirit. Held at the Denver Broncos' home stadium, the game attracted 63,004 fans, surpassing
the previous record of 40,091 set by Bay FC against the Spirit at Oracle Park. This match marked the Summit's first home game in Colorado, following three away games where they achieved a 1-1-1 record. The game concluded in a scoreless draw. The Denver Summit was awarded the 16th NWSL franchise in January 2025, with an expansion fee of $110 million. The team plans to play future home games at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and will eventually move to a new stadium in downtown Denver, expected to be completed by the 2028 season.
Why It's Important?
The record-breaking attendance at the Denver Summit's inaugural home game highlights the growing popularity and support for women's soccer in the United States. This surge in interest is significant for the NWSL, as it demonstrates the league's expanding fan base and the potential for increased revenue through ticket sales and sponsorships. The successful launch of the Denver Summit also underscores the viability of investing in women's sports, encouraging further expansion and investment in the league. The establishment of a dedicated women's soccer stadium in Denver further solidifies the city's commitment to supporting the sport and could serve as a model for other cities looking to enhance their women's sports infrastructure.
What's Next?
Following the record-setting match, the Denver Summit will continue their season with home games at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. In July, they will transition to the temporary Centennial Stadium while their new stadium is under construction. The completion of the new stadium by 2028 is expected to provide a state-of-the-art venue for the team and its fans, potentially attracting more high-profile matches and events. The success of the Summit's launch may prompt other cities to consider hosting NWSL teams, further expanding the league and increasing its national footprint.
