What's Happening?
Highland Heritage Woodworks (HHW), a company based in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is expanding its timber production capabilities thanks to a new grant. The funding has enabled HHW to install a state-of-the-art biomass-powered lumber drying kiln and a handheld timber grading machine. This equipment allows the company to process, dry, and grade high-quality Scottish softwoods, reducing reliance on imported materials and strengthening its supply chain. The expansion is expected to support local employment and provide a unique Scottish alternative to imported European timber. HHW, known for its bespoke carpentry and high-end wooden cabins, has grown its team from three employees in 2021 to 12 by the end of 2025, with plans to increase to around 20 in the next
12-18 months.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of HHW's timber production is significant for the local economy and the broader forestry industry. By increasing its capacity to process locally sourced timber, HHW is contributing to the sustainability of the forestry sector in Scotland. The investment supports local employment and helps retain economic value within the rural economy. Additionally, the use of home-grown wood from sustainably managed forests aligns with environmental goals and reduces the carbon footprint associated with importing timber. This development also highlights the role of government support in fostering growth and innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises.
