What's Happening?
Michigan State University (MSU) is actively pursuing Antijuan Wilkes Jr., a highly sought-after 5-star offensive tackle from Detroit, Michigan. Wilkes, who is ranked as the No. 6 recruit and the top offensive tackle in the 2028
class, has narrowed his college choices to 12 schools, including MSU. The Spartans face stiff competition from other elite programs such as Georgia, Miami, Missouri, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, LSU, Oregon, and Alabama. Despite the challenges, MSU is hopeful due to Wilkes' previous unofficial visits to East Lansing and the early offer extended by the Spartans' previous coaching staff.
Why It's Important?
Securing a commitment from Wilkes would be a significant achievement for MSU, as the program has not landed a 5-star recruit since 2014. His addition could bolster the Spartans' offensive line and enhance their competitiveness in the Big Ten Conference. Moreover, successfully recruiting Wilkes would signal MSU's ability to attract top-tier talent, potentially improving their recruiting reputation and future prospects. The recruitment of Wilkes also highlights the importance of maintaining strong relationships with local high schools, such as Cass Tech, which consistently produces top football talent.
What's Next?
MSU will need to continue its efforts to attract Wilkes by emphasizing the potential for development and success within their program. The Spartans must also remain competitive in offering Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities comparable to other top programs. As Wilkes progresses through his recruitment process, MSU will likely focus on strengthening its pitch and maintaining communication to secure his commitment.
