What's Happening?
The Houston Astros have acquired infielder Braden Shewmake from the New York Yankees in exchange for right-hander Wilmy Sanchez. Shewmake, 28, has previously played in the major leagues with the Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox. He spent the last
season on the Yankees' 40-man roster before being outrighted in February. Starting the current season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Shewmake posted a .250/.314/.313 slash line with no home runs and one stolen base over 36 plate appearances. He is expected to join the Astros' Triple-A affiliate in Sugar Land.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of Braden Shewmake by the Houston Astros adds depth to their infield options, particularly at the Triple-A level. Shewmake's experience in the major leagues and his recent performance in Triple-A suggest he could be a valuable asset for the Astros, providing flexibility and potential call-up options during the season. This move reflects the Astros' strategy of bolstering their roster with experienced players who can contribute both in the minors and potentially at the major league level, enhancing their overall team depth and readiness for the season.
