What's Happening?
NorthStandard has released a report based on its ECDIS Training Assessment (ETA) platform, highlighting significant gaps in Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) knowledge among maritime
bridge teams. The report, which draws on data from over 5,000 assessments, identifies common deficiencies in ECDIS proficiency, such as the inability to identify ENC updates and prioritize correct ENC scales. The findings underscore the need for targeted training to improve navigational safety and situational awareness. The report also introduces updates to the ETA platform, including an AI-powered library and improved user interfaces to support self-learning and continuous skill enhancement.
Why It's Important?
ECDIS is a critical tool for maritime navigation, and proficiency in its use is essential for ensuring safety at sea. The report's findings highlight the urgent need for improved training and education among seafarers to prevent navigational errors and enhance safety. By identifying specific knowledge gaps, the report provides a roadmap for shipping companies to address these issues through targeted training programs. The enhanced ETA platform offers a valuable resource for continuous learning, helping bridge teams to stay updated with best practices and new technological developments.
What's Next?
NorthStandard plans to continue collaborating with the UK Hydrographic Office and other partners to enhance ECDIS training and support safe navigation. Future initiatives may include simulator-based training and classroom sessions focusing on new standards like the S-100 framework. Shipping companies are encouraged to leverage the ETA platform to regularly assess and improve their crews' ECDIS skills, ensuring compliance with upcoming regulatory requirements and reducing the risk of maritime accidents.
