What's Happening?
The University of Minnesota and St. Thomas University have announced that their men's and women's basketball teams will compete against each other for the first time in decades. The men's teams will play on November 6, while the women's teams will face
off on December 1, both at the University of Minnesota's campus venue, the Barn. This marks the first meeting between the men's teams since 1934 and the first-ever matchup for the women's teams. The games are highly anticipated as St. Thomas recently transitioned to Division I in 2021, creating a new in-state rivalry. The men's team of St. Thomas ended the previous season with a 24-10 record, narrowly missing an NCAA Tournament berth, while the women's team finished with a 16-16 record.
Why It's Important?
This matchup is significant as it represents a new chapter in Minnesota's collegiate sports, fostering a local rivalry between two Division I programs. The games are expected to draw significant attention from basketball fans in the region, enhancing the visibility and competitiveness of both programs. For the University of Minnesota, this is an opportunity to strengthen its basketball program under the leadership of coaches Niko Medved and Dawn Plitzuweit, who are building on recent successes. For St. Thomas, the games offer a platform to showcase their growth and competitiveness since moving to Division I, potentially attracting more recruits and support.
What's Next?
While there is no current plan for an annual series, the success and reception of these games could pave the way for future matchups, potentially establishing a regular rivalry. Both universities will likely assess the outcomes and fan engagement to determine the feasibility of continuing this series. The games will also serve as a benchmark for both programs to evaluate their progress and areas for improvement as they prepare for their respective conference seasons.
