What's Happening?
The Scranton metro area has been ranked among the top 20 U.S. metro areas for workforce readiness in the industrial sector, according to a study by Commercial Search. The study evaluated factors such as workforce education
and training, infrastructure, and financial considerations. Scranton placed 18th, highlighting its strong industrial apprenticeship programs and railway infrastructure. John Augustine, president and CEO of Penn’s Northeast, emphasized the region's strong work ethic and the availability of skilled labor in industries like plastics and metal fabrication. The presence of 19 higher education institutions in the area also contributes to preparing a workforce that meets the evolving needs of industrial employers.
Why It's Important?
This recognition underscores Scranton's potential as a hub for industrial employers seeking a skilled workforce. The area's ability to attract and retain industrial businesses can lead to economic growth and job creation, benefiting local communities. The presence of a ready and educated workforce, coupled with positive testimonials from companies that have relocated to the region, enhances Scranton's appeal compared to larger markets like New York and New Jersey. This development could lead to increased investment in the region, further strengthening its industrial base and economic resilience.
What's Next?
With ongoing projects like the construction of a 400,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Pittston Township, Scranton is poised to attract more industrial employers. The focus on manufacturing rather than warehouse distribution indicates a strategic move to diversify the local economy. As more companies consider relocating to Scranton, the region's economic development agencies will continue to market its workforce readiness and available infrastructure. The collaboration between educational institutions and industries will likely intensify to ensure that training programs align with employer needs, further solidifying Scranton's position as a competitive industrial hub.
