What's Happening?
Illinois has set a new record in film production expenditures, reaching $703 million in 2025. This milestone was announced by state officials and film industry leaders on March 19, 2026. The increase represents a 25% rise in film expenditures since 2019,
before the pandemic. The growth is attributed to strategic investments by the Pritzker administration, including the expansion of the Illinois Film Production Tax Credit and the launch of the Film & TV Workforce Training Program. These initiatives have supported an estimated 18,000 industry hires and have positioned Illinois as a leading destination for film and television production. Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the state's historical significance in the industry and the economic benefits of these investments.
Why It's Important?
The record-breaking film production expenditures in Illinois underscore the state's growing influence in the national film industry. The economic impact is significant, with a reported $6.81 return on investment for every dollar spent on the state's tax credit, resulting in over $4.5 billion in economic activity from FY17 to FY24. This growth not only boosts the local economy but also creates numerous job opportunities, with over 550 individuals trained through the Film & TV Workforce Training Program. The success of these initiatives demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted economic policies in fostering industry growth and attracting major productions to the state.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, Illinois aims to continue its momentum in the film industry by further expanding its production infrastructure and workforce training programs. The Illinois Soundstage Capital Grant Program, launched in 2024, will play a crucial role in attracting large-scale projects to the state. As the film industry evolves, Illinois is well-positioned to capitalize on new opportunities, potentially increasing its share of national and international productions. The state's commitment to enhancing its competitive edge suggests ongoing growth and economic benefits for the local community.
