What's Happening?
Sandvik has received an order from Glencore to supply three DR413i rotary blasthole drill rigs for the reopening of the Bajo de la Alumbrera copper mine in Argentina. The order, finalized in the first quarter of 2026, includes the delivery of the first drill rig in April,
with the remaining two expected by the end of 2026. Sandvik will also provide rebuild services for existing drill rigs and maintenance support. The Alumbrera mine is scheduled to resume operations in 2027, with copper production commencing in 2028. This initiative aligns with Glencore's strategy to increase copper output to meet the growing demand driven by the global energy transition.
Why It's Important?
The reopening of the Alumbrera mine is strategically significant for Glencore as it aims to enhance its copper production capabilities. Copper is a critical component in renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles, making it essential for the global energy transition. By securing advanced drilling equipment from Sandvik, Glencore is positioning itself to efficiently meet future demand. This development also supports local infrastructure and workforce capabilities, reducing future development risks. The collaboration between Sandvik and Glencore highlights the importance of technological advancements in mining operations, which can lead to increased productivity and reduced environmental impact.
