What's Happening?
Several Kansas basketball legends are gathering in Lawrence for the 18th annual Rock Chalk Roundball Classic, a charity event initiated by Brian Hanni, known as the 'Voice of the Jayhawks.' Originally started in 2009 to support the family of former Lawrence youth
pastor Brandon White, the event has evolved into a significant fundraiser for local families with children battling cancer. This year, proceeds will benefit the families of the 2026 Starting Five, including Zara Smith, Romeo Padilla, Peyton Dugan, Jude Vander Kelen, and Ember Henry. The event features a friendly scrimmage at Lawrence Free State High School, with tickets available for purchase at local venues. Notable participants include members of the 2008 national championship team and the 2022 title squad, alongside other Kansas basketball greats.
Why It's Important?
The Rock Chalk Roundball Classic serves as a vital community event, leveraging the popularity and influence of Kansas basketball to support families in need. By raising over $2 million in past events, it highlights the power of sports in driving charitable efforts and fostering community solidarity. The participation of former NBA players and national champions underscores the event's significance, drawing attention to the challenges faced by families dealing with pediatric cancer. This initiative not only provides financial assistance but also raises awareness about the disease, encouraging broader community engagement and support.
What's Next?
The event is set to take place at Lawrence Free State High School, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the scrimmage starting at 7 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets at various local venues or online, with options for MVP tickets that include reserved seating and a commemorative t-shirt. For those unable to attend, online auctions and direct donations offer alternative ways to contribute. The final roster of participating players will be announced on the event's social media pages and website, ensuring fans stay informed and engaged.
