What's Happening?
Platinum Group Metals (PTM) is exploring potential partnerships with smaller furnace operators in South Africa to process concentrate from the Waterberg project. This initiative is part of PTM's strategy to develop the Waterberg project in stages, allowing
for incremental smelting capacity development. The Waterberg project, located on the northern limb of South Africa's Bushveld Complex, is owned by Waterberg JV Resources, which includes PTM as the majority owner. PTM is also considering establishing smelter and base metal refinery facilities in either Saudi Arabia or South Africa, pending government authorization for export.
Why It's Important?
The development of the Waterberg project is significant for the platinum group metals industry, as it could enhance local beneficiation and create economic opportunities in South Africa. By collaborating with local furnace operators, PTM aims to optimize processing capabilities and potentially reduce costs. This approach aligns with the South African government's preference for local beneficiation, which could lead to increased job creation and economic growth in the region. The project's success could also influence global platinum supply dynamics.
