What's Happening?
Rivian has initiated the production of its R2 electric SUV at the Normal, Illinois plant, overcoming recent challenges posed by an EF-1 tornado that damaged Building 2, the section dedicated to R2 operations. Chief Executive RJ Scaringe drove the first
customer-ready unit off the production line on April 22, with customer deliveries expected to begin later this spring. The first available model is the Performance Launch Edition, priced at $57,990, offering 330 miles of range and 656 horsepower from a dual-motor setup. Additional trims, including a Premium version and a Standard Long Range, are scheduled for release in late 2026 and early 2027, respectively. Rivian aims to penetrate the mass market with a base model priced at $45,000, set to arrive in late 2027.
Why It's Important?
The commencement of R2 production marks a significant milestone for Rivian, as the company seeks to expand its market presence and achieve positive automotive gross margins by the end of the year. The R2's pricing strategy is crucial for margin management, with engineered cost reductions expected to make the vehicle cheaper to build than its predecessor, the R1. Rivian's ability to ramp up production is vital, as the company has set a full-year delivery guidance of 62,000 to 67,000 units, with the R2 expected to contribute significantly. The recent tornado and declining California registrations add pressure, but Rivian's partnership with Uber and a substantial reservation backlog provide a commercial demand floor.
What's Next?
Rivian is targeting a steep production ramp for the R2, with analysts anticipating fewer than 400 deliveries in Q2, around 7,000 in Q3, and approximately 15,000 in Q4. The company aims to achieve positive automotive gross margins by year-end, contingent on the successful ramp-up of R2 production. Investors will be closely monitoring Rivian's Q1 financial results, due on April 30, for insights into the R2's production trajectory, supply chain readiness post-tornado, and any updated guidance.
