What's Happening?
ABB has been contracted by Cochin Shipyard to supply power and propulsion systems for two electric tugs as part of India's Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP). These vessels, set for delivery to Polestar Maritime in 2027, will operate out of the Jawaharlal
Nehru Port Authority, India's largest container port. The GTTP aims to transition India's harbor tug fleet from diesel-powered to greener alternatives over five phases from 2024 to 2040. ABB's involvement includes providing the necessary electrical systems to support this transition.
Why It's Important?
The contract awarded to ABB is a critical step in India's efforts to reduce carbon emissions in its maritime sector. By transitioning to electric tugs, the GTTP seeks to enhance environmental sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of port operations. This initiative aligns with global trends towards greener maritime solutions and reflects India's commitment to sustainable development. The project also positions ABB as a key player in the global shift towards cleaner maritime technologies.
