Albemarle Corp., the world's largest lithium miner, is experiencing a significant increase in demand for lithium, driven by the growth of data centers utilizing energy storage systems for AI applications. The company has taken a major step towards reopening
its Kings Mountain lithium mine in Cleveland County, North Carolina, after completing the necessary federal permitting process. This site, dormant since the late 1980s, is crucial for securing a domestic supply of lithium. The U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory issued a Final Environmental Assessment, finding no significant impacts, allowing Albemarle to proceed with reopening the mine.
