What's Happening?
HBO Max and WBD Access have announced the return of their writers' program, now called Script Engine, for a second year at the Series Mania Institute. The program aims to support mid-level screenwriters in developing original series concepts that are
locally rooted. It will focus on writers from France, Spain, Italy, and Germany, offering a structured development pathway aligned with HBO Max's strategic goals for original storytelling in Europe. Selected writers will undergo a four-month program involving high-level training, regional-specific coaching, and one-on-one mentoring. The program will culminate in a presentation to HBO Max executives, followed by a six-month first-look period in their respective territories.
Why It's Important?
The relaunch of the writers' program underlines HBO Max's commitment to fostering local talent and expanding its footprint in European markets. By focusing on mid-level writers, the program aims to bring fresh, culturally specific stories to a broader audience, potentially increasing HBO Max's appeal and subscriber base in these regions. This initiative also reflects a growing trend in the entertainment industry to diversify content and tap into local narratives, which can lead to more authentic storytelling and resonate better with local audiences. The program's success could set a precedent for similar initiatives in other regions, further globalizing HBO Max's content strategy.
What's Next?
Applications for the Script Engine program will open on April 2 and close on April 26. The selected writers will begin their training and development process, with the program expected to generate new series concepts that align with HBO Max's strategic goals. The outcome of this program could influence HBO Max's content offerings in Europe and potentially lead to the discovery of new talent that could contribute to the platform's global content strategy.
