What's Happening?
Meta has introduced four custom AI chips as part of its data center expansion strategy. These chips, part of the Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) family, are designed to enhance AI-related tasks within Meta's data centers. The MTIA 300 chip,
already deployed, aids in training smaller AI models, while upcoming chips like MTIA 400, 450, and 500 will focus on generative AI tasks. Meta's Vice President of Engineering, Yee Jiun Song, highlighted the benefits of custom chips in terms of performance and cost efficiency. The chips are manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor and are part of Meta's broader strategy to diversify its silicon supply.
