Bitcoin developers are actively working on proposals to safeguard the cryptocurrency against potential threats posed by quantum computing. Recent research by Google suggests that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could potentially crack Bitcoin's
cryptographic security in under nine minutes. This has raised concerns about the security of approximately 6.5 million Bitcoin tokens, including those belonging to Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) 360 aims to remove the public key from being permanently embedded on-chain, introducing a new output type called Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR). This change would protect new coins from quantum attacks, although it does not address the 1.7 million BTC already in exposed addresses. Other proposals, such as SPHINCS+ and SLH-DSA, suggest using hash-based post-quantum signatures to enhance security, though they come with trade-offs like increased transaction size and fees.
