Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has highlighted a significant shortfall in India's production of bitumen and aviation fuel, emphasizing the need to boost domestic biofuel production. Speaking at an event in Lonavala, Gadkari noted that India requires approximately
120 lakh tonnes of bitumen annually, but domestic production capacity is only about 50 lakh tonnes. This shortfall necessitates the import of 60 to 70 lakh tonnes of bitumen each year, with prices rising from ₹45 per kg to ₹80 per kg. The minister also pointed out a shortage of aviation turbine fuel, which has led to the curtailment of flights from Nagpur. Gadkari stressed the importance of developing bio-aviation fuel domestically, citing successful trials with SpiceJet and Vistara flights using biofuel. He noted that farmers are becoming key producers of bio-aviation fuel, which could transform the economy and strengthen rural incomes.
