What's Happening?
Disney's 'Zootopia 2' has reclaimed the top spot at the China box office, earning RMB 29.1 million ($4.1 million) from January 30 to February 1. The film's cumulative earnings have reached RMB 4.45 billion
($627.3 million). The Chinese box office remains dominated by holdover films as the Lunar New Year approaches, with few new releases making significant impacts. Other top performers include 'Busted Water Pipes,' which grossed $3.1 million, and Warner Bros.' re-release of 'The Shining,' which debuted in third place with $2.5 million. Overall, the weekend box office totaled $23.6 million, with year-to-date earnings down 73.6% compared to the same period in 2025.
Why It's Important?
The performance of 'Zootopia 2' and other holdovers at the Chinese box office highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the film industry in the region, particularly in the lead-up to major holidays like the Lunar New Year. The significant drop in year-to-date earnings compared to the previous year underscores the impact of market conditions and consumer behavior on box office performance. This situation may influence future release strategies for both domestic and international films in China, as studios seek to optimize their timing and marketing efforts to maximize returns.
