What's Happening?
Two former BYU football signees, Devoux Tuataga and Brody Laga, have returned from their respective missions and are set to join the BYU Cougars for the upcoming Fall Camp. Devoux Tuataga, a defensive end from Cedar Valley High School, was a top recruit
in the 2024 class and had offers from several major programs before choosing BYU. He returned from his mission in March and is expected to enroll at BYU, although he may not contribute immediately due to the timing of his return. Brody Laga, a kicker, returned from his mission in Brazil in early May. He will compete for the starting kicker position during Fall Camp, joining a group that includes Matthias Dunn and Ian Sanches. Laga is known for his strong leg, having kicked a 59-yard field goal in high school.
Why It's Important?
The return of Tuataga and Laga is significant for BYU as it bolsters their roster with talented players who have the potential to make an impact in the future. Tuataga's athleticism and experience in high school sports, including volleyball, add depth to the defensive line, which is crucial for the team's defensive strategy. Laga's return is particularly timely given the departure of Will Ferrin, a key kicker for BYU who has moved on to the NFL. Laga's ability to kick long field goals and his potential as a kickoff specialist could fill the void left by Ferrin, providing stability to BYU's special teams.
What's Next?
As Fall Camp approaches, both Tuataga and Laga will integrate into the BYU football program. Tuataga will focus on adapting to the team's defensive schemes and building his physical readiness after his mission. Laga will enter a competitive environment for the kicker position, where his performance in practice will determine his role on the team. The coaching staff will evaluate both players' progress and readiness to contribute during the upcoming season, with the potential for Laga to secure a starting position if he performs well in camp.
