What's Happening?
The Lyric Opera of Chicago is currently showcasing 'El último sueño de Frida y Diego', a contemporary Spanish-language opera by Gabriela Lena Frank and Nilo Cruz. The opera, set in 1957, features Diego Rivera, portrayed by Alfredo Daza, at the grave of Frida Kahlo,
played by Daniela Mack, on the Day of the Dead. Directed by Lorena Maza, the production avoids a straightforward biographical approach, instead opting for an expressionistic and magical realist perspective. The narrative explores the artistic relationship between Rivera and Kahlo, focusing on themes of mortality and the impact of their work. The opera's design, inspired by Day of the Dead iconography and the artists' own works, creates an immersive experience. The music, conducted by Roberto Kalb, blends traditional orchestral sounds with folkloric elements, enhancing the thematic depth of the production.
Why It's Important?
This opera offers a fresh perspective on the lives and legacies of two iconic Mexican artists, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. By focusing on the broader themes of artistic legacy and mortality, the production invites audiences to reflect on the enduring impact of art beyond the lives of its creators. The opera's unique approach, combining magical realism with expressionistic elements, challenges traditional narratives and encourages a deeper understanding of the artists' contributions to cultural and artistic history. This production also highlights the Lyric Opera of Chicago's commitment to presenting diverse and innovative works, enriching the cultural landscape and offering audiences new ways to engage with historical figures.
