What's Happening?
A documentary titled 'Eating Our Way to Extinction' will be screened in Murwillumbah, focusing on the environmental impacts of industrial animal agriculture. The event, organized by the Caldera Environment
Centre and the Tweed Climate Action Network, will feature a panel discussion with climate scientist Gerard Wedderburn-Bisshop and plant-based chef Veet Karen. The film, narrated by Kate Winslet, links animal agriculture to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and greenhouse gas emissions. Wedderburn-Bisshop, who has extensive experience mapping deforestation in Queensland, emphasizes that food systems significantly influence environmental outcomes. He notes that over half a million trees are destroyed daily in Queensland for grazing purposes, primarily for red meat and dairy production.
Why It's Important?
The documentary and accompanying discussion aim to raise awareness about the significant role of food systems in driving environmental crises such as habitat loss and carbon emissions. By highlighting the impact of animal agriculture, the event seeks to encourage a shift towards plant-based diets, which could mitigate global environmental pressures. The screening is part of a broader effort to engage the local community in understanding and addressing these issues, emphasizing the importance of individual dietary choices in combating climate change and biodiversity loss.
What's Next?
The screening will take place on April 22 at the Murwillumbah Citadel, offering attendees an opportunity to engage with experts and like-minded individuals. The event is expected to foster local initiatives aimed at promoting plant-based diets and sustainable food practices. The discussion will also explore how these changes can be implemented at a community level, potentially influencing local policies and practices.
