What's Happening?
The Battle of the Chefs, a cooking team competition, is set to return to downtown Flossmoor on July 11. This event aims to raise funds for the iCan Dream Center in Tinley Park and the Center for Food Equity in Medicine (CFFEIM) in Flossmoor. The competition, which
began in 2021, has been an annual event except for 2025 when it was canceled due to construction. Held in front of Dunning’s Market, the event features two teams, Team Dunning’s and Team 3v3, competing to create dishes using a surprise batch of ingredients. The event is organized by Maureen Mader, owner of Dunning’s Gourmet Market & Deli, who has personal connections to both nonprofits. The iCan Dream Center supports children with autism and intellectual disabilities, while CFFEIM provides food to families dealing with cancer and other serious health conditions. The event is free to watch, but attendees can purchase tickets for gourmet appetizers and cocktails.
Why It's Important?
The Battle of the Chefs serves as a significant fundraising event for two important local nonprofits. The iCan Dream Center plays a crucial role in empowering neurodivergent individuals, helping them transition into adulthood. Meanwhile, the CFFEIM addresses food insecurity among families facing severe health challenges. By supporting these organizations, the event not only raises awareness about their missions but also provides essential financial resources to continue their work. The involvement of local chefs and the community highlights the collaborative effort to address social issues through engaging and entertaining means.
What's Next?
As the event approaches, preparations are underway to ensure a successful competition. The participating teams, Team Dunning’s and Team 3v3, are gearing up for the culinary challenge. The event will also feature performances by the band Return2Soul, adding to the festive atmosphere. Organizers hope to attract a large audience to maximize fundraising efforts. The success of this event could lead to increased support and visibility for the iCan Dream Center and CFFEIM, potentially inspiring similar initiatives in other communities.
