What's Happening?
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Seth Rogen, Abbi Jacobson, Samira Wiley, and writer-director Leah Nelson presented their animated feature 'Tangles' at the Cannes Film Festival. The film, based on Sarah Leavitt's graphic novel memoir, follows Sarah, who returns to her
family in a conservative town after her mother is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Louis-Dreyfus voices the character of Midge, Sarah's mother, and draws from personal experiences with Alzheimer's in her family. Rogen and his wife, Lauren Miller Rogen, are producers on the film and have been active in Alzheimer's advocacy through their nonprofit, Hilarity for Charity. The film explores themes of family, illness, and identity, with a focus on the queer experience as Sarah navigates a new relationship while caring for her mother.
Why It's Important?
The film 'Tangles' addresses the impact of Alzheimer's on families, highlighting the emotional and logistical challenges faced by caregivers. By featuring a queer protagonist, the film also contributes to the representation of LGBTQ+ narratives in mainstream media. The involvement of high-profile actors like Louis-Dreyfus and Rogen, who have personal connections to the subject matter, brings attention to Alzheimer's and the need for increased awareness and support for affected families. The film's premiere at Cannes underscores its cultural significance and potential to influence public discourse on these issues.
