Netflix has announced a new series order for 'Minimum Wage,' a workplace comedy from American High. The show, which originated as a short-form series, will consist of 28 episodes, each approximately 12.5 minutes long. It is set in a local pizza shop and
follows a group of teenagers managing their work and school life under a demanding boss. Jeremy Garelick and Will Phelps, founders of American High, will serve as showrunners and executive producers, alongside Axelle Azoulay.
Why It's Important?
The series represents Netflix's ongoing strategy to adapt successful digital content into mainstream streaming offerings. By transforming a viral short-form series into a full-fledged show, Netflix is tapping into the digital-native audience that consumes content on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. This move could potentially attract a younger demographic to Netflix, expanding its subscriber base. Additionally, it highlights the growing trend of digital creators transitioning to traditional media platforms, offering new opportunities for content creators and diversifying the types of content available on streaming services.
What's Next?
The series is expected to launch on Netflix later this year, with production already underway. As Netflix continues to explore similar projects, it may further invest in digital-first content, potentially leading to more partnerships with creators from platforms like TikTok and YouTube. The success of 'Minimum Wage' could influence Netflix's content strategy, encouraging the platform to seek out more innovative and unconventional series formats that appeal to younger audiences.
