What's Happening?
The stage adaptation of the popular horror franchise 'Paranormal Activity' is set to make its Broadway debut. Titled 'Paranormal Activity – A New Story Live on Broadway,' the production will have a limited 20-week engagement at the August Wilson Theatre.
Previews are scheduled to begin on August 14, with the official opening night on September 15. The play, written by Levi Holloway and directed by Felix Barrett, offers an original story inspired by the film series, rather than a direct adaptation of its characters. The production has previously enjoyed sold-out runs in major cities such as London, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. Jason Blum, the founder and CEO of Blumhouse, who originally produced the film series, is part of the producing team for this Broadway venture.
Why It's Important?
The transition of 'Paranormal Activity' from film to stage highlights the growing trend of adapting popular film franchises for live theater, potentially attracting a new audience to Broadway. This move could broaden the appeal of Broadway productions by tapping into the established fan base of the film series, which has grossed over $900 million globally. The involvement of Jason Blum, a prominent figure in the horror genre, adds credibility and anticipation to the production. The success of this adaptation could encourage similar projects, blending cinematic storytelling with the unique experience of live theater, thus diversifying the types of productions available on Broadway.
What's Next?
As the production prepares for its Broadway debut, the creative team will likely focus on finalizing the technical aspects of the show, including set design, special effects, and sound, to ensure it captures the eerie essence of the film series. The response from New York audiences will be crucial in determining the show's success and potential for extended runs or tours. Additionally, the production's performance could influence future adaptations of film franchises for the stage, potentially leading to a new wave of similar projects.
