What's Happening?
Formula 1 is set to introduce changes to its hybrid systems starting from the Miami Grand Prix, scheduled for May 1-3, 2026. The adjustments aim to address ongoing issues with energy management and speed differentials that have been problematic since
the introduction of new powertrains this year. These powertrains feature more powerful electric motors, but the batteries can only deliver full power for a few seconds per lap, leading to reduced performance in qualifying and dangerous speed differentials during races. The new rules will reduce the maximum energy recharge per lap from 8 MJ to 7 MJ, allowing drivers to be flat-out more often. Additionally, the energy harvesting capacity during super clipping will increase from 250 kW to 350 kW, potentially reducing the time spent on energy management during races.
