What's Happening?
The JCC Movement, a major platform for Jewish engagement in North America, is actively working to integrate inclusion into its core operations. With nearly 150 JCCs and JCC Camps serving 1.5 million people weekly, the movement has developed Eight Guiding Principles on Inclusion to ensure that inclusion is a shared responsibility across the organization. These principles are designed to be accessible and are used to train staff and promote inclusive practices. The movement's efforts include a quarterly Inclusion Peer Community gathering and initiatives like JCC Maccabi Access, which provides opportunities for athletes with disabilities.
Why It's Important?
The JCC Movement's focus on inclusion highlights the importance of creating environments where all individuals
can participate and contribute. By embedding inclusion into its organizational framework, the movement sets a precedent for other Jewish and secular organizations to follow. This approach not only strengthens community bonds but also enhances the overall vibrancy and sustainability of Jewish life. The movement's success in raising funds for inclusion initiatives demonstrates the potential for inclusion work to be both impactful and financially viable.
What's Next?
The JCC Movement plans to continue expanding its inclusion efforts, with a focus on training and resource development to empower all staff as inclusion professionals. Future initiatives may include further integration of inclusion into early childhood education and adaptive fitness programs. The movement's ongoing commitment to inclusion serves as a model for other organizations seeking to enhance their own practices and create more inclusive communities.
