What's Happening?
Eli Lilly has entered into a $1.9 billion collaboration with Ascidian Therapeutics to develop treatments for kidney diseases caused by single gene alterations. The partnership will leverage Ascidian's RNA-editing platform, which repairs mutations by replacing
entire exons at the RNA level. This approach allows for the transcription of healthy proteins without the risks associated with direct DNA editing. The deal grants Lilly exclusive rights to specific kidney disease targets, with the potential to expand if the partnership proves successful. Ascidian will lead the discovery and some preclinical work, while Lilly will take over as projects approach clinical trials. This collaboration is part of Lilly's broader strategy to expand its genetic medicine capabilities.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Eli Lilly and Ascidian Therapeutics represents a significant advancement in the treatment of genetic kidney diseases, which affect over 60 known genetic conditions. By focusing on RNA-based therapies, the collaboration aims to provide effective treatment options for patients with serious monogenic kidney diseases. This deal is part of Lilly's ongoing efforts to enhance its portfolio through strategic acquisitions and partnerships, funded by its growing revenues from diabetes and weight-loss medications. The success of this collaboration could lead to breakthroughs in genetic medicine, potentially reducing the burden of kidney diseases and improving patient outcomes.
