What's Happening?
Dorian LPG has taken delivery of a new dual-fuel very large gas carrier (VLGC) named Areion, capable of running on both LPG and fuel oil. Built by Hanwha Ocean Heavy Industries in South Korea, Areion is equipped with a hybrid scrubber to reduce emissions
of sulfur oxides, particulate matter, and black carbon. The ship's main engine operates on LPG, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 20%. Areion will be employed under the Helios LPG Pool, enhancing Dorian's fleet with over 20% of its ships now using low-emission alternative fuels. The ship is also fitted with Alternative Marine Power equipment for emission-free port operations and is ready for hybrid battery power management.
Why It's Important?
The addition of Areion to Dorian LPG's fleet underscores the company's commitment to sustainable maritime operations. By investing in dual-fuel technology and emissions-reducing equipment, Dorian is positioning itself as a leader in environmentally responsible shipping. This move aligns with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry, which is under increasing regulatory pressure to adopt cleaner technologies. The ship's ability to operate on LPG and utilize shore power in ports represents a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of shipping, benefiting both the company and the broader industry.
What's Next?
Dorian LPG's focus on sustainability is likely to continue, with potential future investments in similar technologies to further reduce emissions across its fleet. The company's strategy may influence other maritime operators to adopt dual-fuel and hybrid technologies, contributing to a broader industry shift towards greener practices. Regulatory bodies and environmental organizations will be watching closely to assess the impact of these technologies on emissions reduction targets.
