What's Happening?
The U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) announced that tennis participation in the United States reached a record high of 27.3 million players in 2025. This marks the sixth consecutive year of growth for the sport, which saw a significant increase in popularity during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. According to an independent study, tennis participation has risen by 54% since 2019. In 2025, more than half of the players, approximately 14.5 million, played tennis ten or more times. Additionally, there were 4.9 million first-time players, representing a 9% increase. The USTA has set a goal to reach 35 million players by 2035, with notable gains in participation among women, Black people, Hispanics, and Asian/Pacific Islanders.
Why It's Important?
The surge in tennis
participation in the U.S. reflects a broader trend of increased interest in recreational sports, particularly those that can be played outdoors and allow for social distancing. This growth is significant for the USTA and the tennis industry, as it suggests a robust market for tennis-related products, services, and events. The increase in diverse participation also highlights the sport's expanding appeal across different demographic groups, which could lead to more inclusive and varied representation in professional tennis. The USTA's goal of reaching 35 million players by 2035 indicates a long-term commitment to growing the sport and fostering a new generation of tennis enthusiasts.
What's Next?
The USTA is likely to continue its efforts to promote tennis across the country, focusing on initiatives that encourage participation among underrepresented groups. This may include community outreach programs, partnerships with schools, and the development of accessible facilities. As the sport continues to grow, there may be increased investment in tennis infrastructure and events, potentially leading to more opportunities for professional and amateur players alike. The USTA's strategic plans will be crucial in maintaining the momentum of tennis participation and achieving its ambitious goals for the future.
