What's Happening?
Century Aluminum Company has expressed support for the U.S. Supreme Court's decision regarding tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The company aligns with President Trump's trade policies, which aim to level
the playing field for American industry and workers. These policies include the IEEPA tariffs and the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs, which remain in effect. Century Aluminum plans to expand U.S. aluminum production, including increasing output at its Mt. Holly, S.C. smelter and building a new smelter in Inola, Oklahoma, which will create thousands of jobs.
Why It's Important?
The Supreme Court's decision and Century Aluminum's expansion plans underscore the impact of trade policies on domestic manufacturing. By supporting tariffs, Century Aluminum aims to protect and grow the U.S. aluminum industry, which is vital for sectors like aerospace and defense. The expansion projects are expected to boost local economies through job creation and increased production capacity. This aligns with broader efforts to reshore manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign imports, which can enhance national security and economic resilience.
