Smaiyl Makyshov, a 24-year-old entrepreneur, has made headlines by leaving Brown University to establish his own venture capital firm, Multifaceted Capital, in San Francisco. Makyshov, originally from Kazakhstan, moved to the U.S. to attend Phillips Exeter
Academy and later enrolled at Brown University. However, he decided to drop out after three semesters to pursue his vision of community-focused investing. His firm targets underrepresented communities, such as alumni networks and college dropouts, which he identified as untapped markets in the venture capital landscape. Despite initial challenges, including skepticism about his age and lack of experience, Makyshov successfully raised $225,000 for his pilot fund in 2023 and has since raised a second fund of $2.1 million, investing in over 30 companies.
