What's Happening?
DRDGOLD, a company specializing in gold tailings remining, is advancing its strategy of tailings retreatment to simultaneously recover gold and restore land. According to CEO Niël Pretorius, the company's operations focus on reprocessing historical mine
dumps to extract residual gold while rehabilitating the land through ecosystem restoration. This approach is implemented at the Ergo Mining operations facility on the East Rand of Gauteng and the Far West Gold Recoveries (FWGR) in the Carletonville area. The company processes millions of tonnes of historic tailings annually, consolidating them into modern-engineered tailings storage facilities (TSFs). This method not only recovers valuable resources but also reduces environmental liabilities by transforming old mine dumps into compliant TSFs. DRDGOLD's efforts have led to the rehabilitation of 56 hectares of land, declared safe for use by the National Nuclear Regulator.
Why It's Important?
The significance of DRDGOLD's tailings retreatment strategy lies in its dual impact on the environment and the economy. By reprocessing tailings, the company not only recovers gold, contributing to the economy, but also mitigates environmental risks associated with legacy mine dumps. These dumps, often located near communities, pose contamination risks and environmental hazards. The company's approach reduces the footprint of these dumps, suppresses dust, and lowers the potential for acid mine water generation. This model of reclaiming residues and restoring land could serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives in other regions with historical mine residues, potentially leading to broader environmental and economic benefits.
What's Next?
DRDGOLD plans to expand its tailings retreatment operations, particularly at the FWGR site, where a plant upgrade is expected to double throughput. The company is also constructing a Regional TSF and a 135 km pipeline network to support long-term retreatment in the Far West Rand. These developments are part of DRDGOLD's strategy to increase group throughput to about three million tonnes a month. The company continues to explore opportunities to expand its model of tailings retreatment and land restoration both within South Africa and internationally.
Beyond the Headlines
DRDGOLD's approach to tailings retreatment highlights the potential for mining companies to play a significant role in environmental restoration. By integrating environmental considerations into their operations, companies can address historical environmental liabilities while contributing to sustainable development. This strategy not only enhances the company's reputation but also aligns with global trends towards more sustainable and responsible mining practices. The success of DRDGOLD's model could encourage other mining companies to adopt similar practices, leading to broader industry shifts towards sustainability.
