What's Happening?
To honor Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a collaborative event was organized by the Leadership, Asian Culture Club, Journaling Club, and Art Club on the Green. The event featured various booths offering cultural activities and food,
such as boba and bánh mì, which were popular among students. The Journaling Club provided traditional Chinese knot-tying and calligraphy activities, while the Art Club offered fan-making inspired by Japanese traditions. Despite the engaging activities, the event saw a lower turnout than expected, possibly due to limited advertising and its scheduling on Senior Ditch Day. Additionally, there was a noted lack of Pacific Islander representation, which organizers hope to address in future events.
Why It's Important?
The event highlights the importance of cultural representation and awareness in educational settings, fostering inclusivity and understanding among students. Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month on campus provides an opportunity for students to engage with and appreciate diverse cultures, promoting a more inclusive community. The event also underscores the need for better planning and representation, particularly for underrepresented groups like Pacific Islanders. By addressing these issues, future events can enhance cultural education and inclusivity, benefiting the student body and fostering a more comprehensive understanding of AAPI contributions and heritage.
What's Next?
Organizers plan to improve future AAPI Heritage Month celebrations by increasing advertising efforts and ensuring better representation of all AAPI communities, including Pacific Islanders. They aim to involve more clubs and possibly schedule the event on a day that maximizes student participation. These steps are intended to create a more inclusive and well-attended celebration, enhancing cultural awareness and appreciation on campus.
