What's Happening?
The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) has expressed support for the European Parliament's approval of the CountEmissionsEU Regulation. This new regulation establishes a standardized methodology
for calculating emissions from transport services, including air and ground transport. The initiative aims to help business travelers make more sustainable choices by enabling them to compare the carbon footprint of their trips across different providers and modes of transport. The regulation addresses the current fragmentation in emissions tracking, where 70% of companies use inconsistent methods.
Why It's Important?
The adoption of a standardized emissions measurement framework is significant for the business travel sector, as it promotes transparency and accountability in tracking carbon footprints. By providing a consistent methodology, the regulation facilitates meaningful comparisons and encourages sustainable travel practices. This development is particularly important as businesses increasingly prioritize sustainability in their operations. The regulation also supports smaller companies by offering a free public calculation tool, easing the implementation of emissions tracking.
What's Next?
The GBTA is advocating for global harmonization of transport emissions accounting to prevent regional fragmentation and enhance the ability of business travelers to track and compare emissions worldwide. The association hopes that the CountEmissionsEU Regulation will serve as a first step towards a global standard. The GBTA plans to continue its efforts in promoting sustainable mobility, with the topic set to be a focal point at their upcoming Sustainability Summit in Vienna.
