DHL Supply Chain and Retail Economics have released a report highlighting significant risks to UK grocery sales due to product availability issues. The report, titled 'The Availability Effect: Why trust, margin and loyalty start at the shelf edge,' indicates
that stock-outs are now a more significant factor than price in determining customer loyalty. The study found that one in five grocery shopping trips involves at least one missing item, leading to an estimated £2.1 billion in displaced sales annually. This issue has prompted 44% of consumers to switch or add another supermarket to their shopping routine, with younger shoppers under 45 being particularly affected. Convenience stores are notably impacted, accounting for nearly half of all displaced spending linked to stock-outs, despite representing only a fifth of total grocery sales.
