What's Happening?
Maccaferri has implemented its Terramesh® MSE Wall System at the Tasiast Gold Mine in Mauritania, operated by the mining company KINROSS. The project required a retaining tip wall with two wing walls of 32.5 meters each. AUSENCO, responsible for Engineering,
Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) services, selected Maccaferri's system for its cost-effectiveness and flexibility. The Terramesh® system, known for its modular design and corrosion-resistant polymer coating, was chosen to support the mine's infrastructure expansion, including a new front-end processing facility and enhancements to existing milling and tailings systems. The project resulted in the tallest MSE Terramesh® wall in the mining sector, utilizing nearly 4,000 tons of stone fill, which included approximately 20 kilograms of gold.
Why It's Important?
The implementation of Maccaferri's Terramesh® system at the Tasiast Gold Mine represents a significant advancement in mining infrastructure. This system offers several benefits, including reduced costs, enhanced reliability, and improved flexibility, which are crucial for large-scale mining operations. The corrosion-resistant properties of the system ensure a long service life, reducing maintenance needs and associated costs. Additionally, the use of local materials for backfill supports environmental sustainability and reduces transportation costs. The project also contributes to local job creation, as the installation process requires minimal skilled labor. These factors collectively enhance the operational efficiency and economic viability of the Tasiast Gold Mine.
What's Next?
As the Tasiast Gold Mine continues to expand its operations, the successful implementation of the Terramesh® system may lead to further adoption of similar technologies in other mining projects. The positive outcomes from this project could encourage other mining companies to consider Maccaferri's solutions for their infrastructure needs. Additionally, the focus on sustainability and cost-effectiveness may influence future mining practices, promoting the use of environmentally friendly and economically viable technologies. Stakeholders in the mining industry may closely monitor the performance of the Terramesh® system to assess its long-term benefits and potential applications in other regions.
Beyond the Headlines
The use of Maccaferri's Terramesh® system at the Tasiast Gold Mine highlights the growing importance of sustainable practices in the mining industry. By utilizing local materials and reducing environmental impact, the project aligns with global trends towards more responsible resource extraction. The project's success may also prompt regulatory bodies to encourage or mandate similar practices in other mining operations, potentially leading to industry-wide changes. Furthermore, the emphasis on local job creation underscores the social responsibility aspect of modern mining projects, which can enhance community relations and support regional economic development.
