What's Happening?
Nathan MacKinnon, center for the Colorado Avalanche, has been named one of the three finalists for the 2025-26 Hart Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the player deemed most valuable to his team in the NHL. This marks the fifth time MacKinnon has been a finalist for the prestigious
award, having previously won it in the 2023-24 season. During the 2025-26 season, MacKinnon led the NHL with 53 goals in 80 games, securing his first Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy. His performance helped the Avalanche achieve a franchise-record 121-point season and earn the Presidents’ Trophy as the league's best regular season team. MacKinnon also led the league in several categories, including even-strength goals and multi-goal performances, and became the 20th-fastest player in NHL history to reach 1,100 career points.
Why It's Important?
MacKinnon's nomination as a Hart Trophy finalist underscores his significant impact on the Colorado Avalanche and the NHL at large. His performance not only contributed to the Avalanche's successful season but also highlighted his role as a key player in the league. Winning the Hart Trophy would further cement his status as one of the top players in the NHL, joining the ranks of other multiple-time winners like Connor McDavid, Alex Ovechkin, and Sidney Crosby. This recognition could enhance his marketability and influence within the sport, potentially affecting team dynamics and contract negotiations.
What's Next?
The winner of the Hart Memorial Trophy will be announced following the conclusion of the NHL playoffs. As the season progresses, MacKinnon and the Avalanche will focus on maintaining their momentum in the playoffs, where his performance could further influence the final voting. The announcement of the Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award finalists is scheduled for May 11, continuing the series of NHL Trophy finalist announcements.
