What's Happening?
South African utility Eskom has received approval from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for an interim discounted power tariff for ferrochrome producers Samancor Chrome and a joint venture between Glencore and Merafe Resources. The
tariff is set at 0.62 rand per kilowatt-hour. This move aims to support struggling ferrochrome producers affected by high electricity costs, which have led to the closure of several plants. The framework includes risk-sharing mechanisms and does not impose additional financial burdens on standard tariff customers or taxpayers.
Why It's Important?
The approval of a discounted power tariff is a significant step in supporting South Africa's ferrochrome industry, which has been under pressure due to high electricity costs. By reducing operational costs, the tariff aims to prevent further plant closures and job losses, stabilizing the industry. This decision also highlights the importance of regulatory support in maintaining the competitiveness of South Africa's mining sector. The equitable upside-sharing arrangement linked to market performance ensures that benefits are shared among stakeholders, promoting sustainable industry growth.
