What's Happening?
Graphite One Inc. has provided an update on the permitting progress of its Graphite Creek Project in Alaska under the FAST-41 federal permitting program. The project, which includes an open-pit graphite mine and processing plant, was accepted as a FAST-41 'covered
project' in June 2025. This designation makes it the first Alaska mining project on the FAST-41 Federal Permitting Dashboard. The project is on track for a federal permitting decision by September 2026, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers leading the process. The FAST-41 program aims to streamline federal permitting by coordinating reviews among agencies and establishing clear timelines.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of the Graphite Creek Project in the FAST-41 program is significant as it aims to reduce permitting delays and enhance transparency. This is crucial for the U.S., which is currently 100% import-dependent on foreign graphite, primarily from China. The project supports national priorities to develop domestic resources for critical minerals, aligning with recent Presidential Executive Orders. By advancing this project, Graphite One aims to establish a secure, domestic supply chain for lithium-ion battery anode materials, which are essential for the electric vehicle and energy storage sectors.
What's Next?
Graphite One plans to pursue FAST-41 coverage for a proposed manufacturing facility in Ohio, which will process graphite into high-value anode materials. This facility is part of a broader strategy to create a vertically integrated supply chain. The successful completion of the permitting process and subsequent development of the Graphite Creek Project could significantly impact the U.S. graphite market, reducing reliance on imports and supporting the growth of the domestic battery industry.
