What's Happening?
Amazon-owned Audible has launched a new lower-priced subscription plan in the U.S. and five other global territories. The Standard plan, priced at $8.99 per month, aims to provide more flexibility and access to audiobooks. Subscribers will receive one
audiobook per month from Audible's catalog and have unlimited listening access to a curated library, which includes select Audible Originals and nearly 200 popular titles previously available on Wondery+. This move is part of Audible's strategy to attract more customers by offering a more affordable option compared to its Premium plan, which costs $14.95 per month and includes access to the full catalog and a monthly credit for one permanent audiobook purchase.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of a lower-priced plan by Audible is significant as it reflects the company's efforts to adapt to a more competitive and consolidated audio market. By offering a more affordable subscription, Audible aims to attract 'lighter listeners' and expand its customer base, potentially increasing its market share in the audiobook industry. This move could also pressure competitors like Spotify, which has recently entered the audiobook space, to adjust their pricing strategies. Additionally, the plan could benefit publishers and creators by reaching new audiences, thereby growing the overall audiobook category.
What's Next?
Following the rollout of the Standard plan, Audible will continue to offer its Premium subscription. The company expects the new plan to drive significant member acquisition and retention, as early testing in markets like the UK and Australia showed a double-digit increase in new member sign-ups. As the audio market continues to evolve, Audible may further refine its offerings to maintain its competitive edge and respond to consumer demand. The success of this plan could influence other audio content providers to explore similar pricing strategies to capture a broader audience.
