What's Happening?
Allison Belan, previously the director of strategic innovation and services at Duke University Press, has been appointed as the new executive director of the Book Industry Study Group (BISG). She will succeed Brian O’Leary, who is retiring after a decade
of leadership. Belan is set to officially join BISG on June 22, ahead of O’Leary’s retirement on June 30. During her 22-year tenure at Duke University Press, Belan was responsible for overseeing technology operations and publishing infrastructure, as well as managing the Scholarly Publishing Collective. Her experience aligns with BISG’s focus areas, including supply chain, metadata, rights management, and standards development. BISG chair Matt Kennell expressed confidence in Belan’s ability to engage with key stakeholders and lead the organization’s 'Book Publishing Next' initiative, which aims to modernize the book publishing supply chain.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of Allison Belan as the executive director of BISG is significant for the book publishing industry, as it signals a continued focus on innovation and modernization within the supply chain. Belan’s extensive experience in technology and publishing infrastructure positions her to effectively lead BISG’s efforts in addressing industry challenges such as metadata management and accessibility. Her leadership is expected to enhance BISG’s role in fostering collaboration among publishers, distributors, and other stakeholders. This transition comes at a time when the publishing industry is increasingly reliant on digital solutions and efficient supply chain management to meet consumer demands and adapt to market changes.
What's Next?
As Allison Belan prepares to take on her new role, BISG has initiated a transition plan that includes opportunities for members to meet and engage with her. Belan will focus on implementing the 'Book Publishing Next' plan, which aims to update the supply chain’s functionality. The organization will continue to operate with a remote staff model, reflecting modern workplace trends. Stakeholders in the publishing industry will likely monitor how Belan’s leadership influences BISG’s strategic direction and its impact on industry standards and practices.
