What's Happening?
Shuka Minerals, a company listed on both the AIM and JSE, has appointed Ox Drilling as the contractor for its Phase 1 drilling program at the Kabwe zinc mine in Zambia. This initiative is managed by Shuka's subsidiary, Leopard Exploration and Mining.
The drilling campaign, set to commence in mid-May, will be supported by GeoQuest, Shuka's geological consultants. The program involves a 2,000-meter diamond drilling operation targeting known mineralized zones at depths between 100 and 500 meters. This marks the first resource drilling at Kabwe since the 1970s. The results from this phase, along with ongoing exploration activities, will help finalize locations for a broader 10,000-meter Phase 2 program and a subsequent resource and reserves upgrade. Shuka aims to increase the existing resource by 50%, which currently stands at 6.8 million tonnes with significant zinc and lead concentrations.
Why It's Important?
The initiation of this drilling program is significant for Shuka Minerals as it aims to enhance its resource base and potentially increase its market value. The exploration at Kabwe is expected to provide a better understanding of the mine's by-products, such as silver, vanadium, germanium, and gallium, which could add substantial value. This development is crucial for the mining industry in Zambia, potentially boosting local employment and economic activity. For Shuka, successful exploration could lead to increased investor confidence and financial growth, given the estimated in-situ value of $4 billion for the current resources. The program also highlights the strategic importance of Kabwe in the regional mining landscape.
What's Next?
Following the completion of the Phase 1 drilling, Shuka Minerals plans to proceed with a more extensive Phase 2 program, which will involve further drilling and resource evaluation. The company aims to achieve a significant resource upgrade by the end of the year. The results from these efforts will likely influence future investment decisions and operational strategies. Additionally, the collaboration with Ox Drilling and GeoQuest is expected to ensure a safe and efficient execution of the drilling activities, potentially setting a benchmark for future projects in the region.
