Nicholas Phan, a Grammy Award-winning American tenor, is being celebrated by Classical IPR during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Phan, who attended Interlochen Arts Camp in the 1990s, initially began his musical journey as a violinist
before transitioning to classical singing. He has since performed with opera companies worldwide and collaborates with renowned musicians in chamber music. In 2010, Phan co-founded Art Song Chicago to promote art song and vocal chamber music, serving as its artistic director. His notable work includes the song cycle 'Stranger' by composer Nico Muhly, which explores themes of immigration and identity in the U.S. In 2023, 'Stranger' was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album, marking Phan as the first singer of Asian descent to receive a nomination in this category.
