What's Happening?
The San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement with free agent defensive end Cam Sample on a one-year contract. Sample, who was a fourth-round draft pick in 2021 from Tulane, has spent four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. Known for his versatility,
Sample has played both as an interior defensive lineman and an edge rusher. In the 2025 season, he appeared in 14 games, starting two, and recorded two sacks and 17 tackles. This marked a comeback for Sample after missing the entire 2024 season due to an Achilles injury. Over his career, he has accumulated seven sacks and 85 tackles.
Why It's Important?
The signing of Cam Sample adds depth to the 49ers' defensive line, which is crucial for maintaining a strong defense throughout the NFL season. Sample's ability to play multiple positions on the line provides the team with flexibility in their defensive schemes. His previous experience and performance with the Bengals suggest he can be a valuable asset, especially if he remains healthy. This move also reflects the 49ers' strategy to bolster their defense with experienced players who can contribute immediately, potentially impacting their performance in the upcoming season.
